The Elephant in the Room: Why “Cheap” Solar is the Most Expensive Mistake You Can Make

The Elephant in the Room: Why “Cheap” Solar is the Most Expensive Mistake You Can Make

We know that installing solar is a significant investment for you and your family. When you are spending thousands of pounds on your home, it is vital to get it installed right the first time.

Think of it this way: You wouldn’t trust a double-glazing salesman to fix the brakes on your car. You’d want a qualified mechanic who understands the stakes of getting it wrong. Solar is no different. It is a complex, high-voltage electrical system, not just a set of glass panels. At Legra Electrical, we aren’t just “installers”—we have years of professional electrical installation experience. We lead with engineering, not a sales pitch.

There is an elephant in the room when it comes to solar energy: The Price Tag. If you’ve been researching solar, you’ve likely noticed that quotes can vary by thousands of pounds. We strive to be competitive, but we will never be the cheapest. That is a deliberate choice.

  1. Hardware & Design: The Difference Between 5 Years and 25 Years

What’s holding the panels to your roof—and how they are laid out—determines your return on investment.

* The Mounting System: Most budget installers use lower quality and lower cost mounting kits to shave off a few hundred pounds. We use Van der Valk, one of the strongest, most engineered systems on the market. It’s built to withstand the harshest British gales without causing micro-cracks in your panels.

* Maximizing Your Roof: Many national installers (like a recent national company’s quote we reviewed) use basic “one-size-fits-all” designs. While they offered 10 panels at 450W (4.5kW total), our bespoke design fit 14 panels at 480W (6.72kW total) on the exact same roof.

* The Tech: We use the latest Aiko 480W panels. Between the better tech and the smarter layout, we offered 2.22kW of extra generation that the “big” company simply missed.

  1. Beware the “One-Day” Install & The Testing Trap

If a company promises to install 14 panels and a battery in a single day, be extremely careful. Rushed installs often lead to skipped safety checks and “shortcut” wiring.

Even more concerning is the “Testing Trap.” We have heard of local installers who don’t carry out the required testing mandated by law. Instead, they “make up” the commissioning results on the paperwork back at the office.

At Legra, all of our measuring tools and multi-function testers are fully calibrated, and our calibration certificates are available for inspection upon request. We don’t just guess; we measure with precision. Are your other quotes coming from installers who can say the same?

Our Advice: When your installer finishes, ask to see their testing equipment. A real installer will be happy to show you the live readings. If they haven’t touched a tester all day, they haven’t done the job legally.

  1. The Certification Trap: Are You Actually Covered?

At Legra Electrical, we hold MCS accreditation for both Solar PV and Battery technologies and issue two separate MCS certificates: one for your Solar PV and one for your Battery Storage. The vast majority of our competitors only hold one. Without both, you may struggle to access export payments (SEG) or face issues with home surveys when you eventually sell your property.

Verify us: Our registration number is NAP 73087.

  1. The “Invisible” Costs of Quality

Waste Management: It is illegal for contractors to put commercial waste in your domestic bin. We maintain a full Waste Carriers Licence. We don’t leave old packaging for you to deal with; we dispose of it legally and responsibly.

Full Compliance: Every install is done to the exact letter of the law/ regulations and manufacturers guidance. No skipped electrical protections, no “fast” wiring, and no compromised safety.

  1. The Race to the Bottom: Who Will Be There in 10 Years?

Cheap companies often go bust because their margins are too thin to survive. When they fold, your warranty goes with them. Legra Electrical is a stable, local business. In fact, we are frequently called out to remedy “bargain” installs from companies that have either vanished or refused to fix their own sub-standard work. Whether it’s fixing roof leaks, replacing “budget” inverters, or properly commissioning a system that was never tested, the “saving” from the original quote is quickly eaten up by repair costs.

The Bottom Line

Solar is a 25-year investment. Saving 5-10% today by choosing an installer who cuts corners, fakes tests, or lacks accreditation usually results in 100% of the headache later.

At the end of the day, we are technicians who care about the quality of our craft, rather than salespeople who just want to earn a commission. We aren’t interested in being the cheapest; we are interested in being the best value for your peace of mind and providing the best level of service.
