The Perfect Storm: Why Right Now is the Absolute Best Time to Invest in Solar

Percentage Symbol

If you have been sitting on the fence about investing in solar energy for your home or business, the landscape is shifting rapidly. A combination of imminent tax changes, rising grid costs, and massive alterations to government green grants means that waiting until next year could cost you thousands of pounds.

At Legra Electrical & Renewables, we believe in helping property owners make smart, data-driven decisions. Aside from a vehicle, a high-performance renewable energy system is likely the single biggest financial investment you will make in your property this year. You deserve to know exactly how upcoming policy changes are going to impact your wallet.

Here is a breakdown of the solar landscape ahead, and why acting right now is the smartest move you can make for your building.

1.The Imminent VAT Deadline: The Clock is Ticking

Since 2022, UK homeowners have enjoyed a fantastic tax incentive: 0% VAT on solar panels, battery storage, and heat pump installations. On a typical premium system, this saving keeps thousands of pounds in your bank account rather than sending it to HMRC.

However, this tax holiday is not permanent. The 0% VAT relief scheme is legally scheduled to expire on 31st March 2027.

Once that deadline hits, current legislation dictates that the rate will revert back to the previous 5% reduced rate for energy-saving materials. On a £10,000 installation, that is an immediate, automatic price increase of £500 overnight for the exact same hardware.

The 20% Risk

While the law specifies a return to 5%, any upcoming budget changes or shifting political priorities before 2027 mean the government could theoretically remove the energy-saving discount entirely. If that happens, residential solar would revert to the standard 20% VAT rate—the same rate currently applied to commercial properties and separate hardware purchases. On that same £10,000 system, a jump to 20% would blow the price up by an extra £2,000 overnight.

Getting your installation completed and certified while the 0% rate is legally locked in eliminates both the guaranteed 5% hike and the theoretical 20% risk.

2. Global Supply Shifts: Why Wholesale Hardware Prices Are Set to Climb

For the past couple of years, the solar industry has benefited from historically low global hardware costs, driven heavily by manufacturing dynamics in Asia. However, the global wholesale market is hitting a critical turning point.

China is systematically lifting long-standing domestic green energy subsidies and adjusting manufacturing levies. For years, these state-backed subsidies artificially depressed global wholesale prices. As these protections are removed and manufacturing levies change, international factory-gate prices for solar PV cells, wafers, and essential raw materials are facing upward pressure.

In fact, wholesale hardware prices have already started to increase across the supply chain, meaning the period of ultra-cheap component sourcing has drawn to a close. Compounding these manufacturer shifts, ongoing geopolitical issues and supply line disruptions in the Middle East are pushing freight, shipping insurance, and transport costs significantly higher.

Because the UK market relies heavily on these global supply chains, these combined international factors will inevitably filter down into higher wholesale component costs for installers. Securing your system now allows you to lock in current stock prices before these international market adjustments hit domestic shores.

3. The 5-Year Reality Check: Energy Prices Are Structurally Higher

Many property owners hoped that the energy crisis was completely behind us, but looking at the data over a five-year arc reveals a very different story. While prices have dropped from the extreme, record-breaking spikes of 2022 and 2023, typical household energy bills remain roughly 53% higher than they were five years ago.

Period

Average Annual Bill (Typical Use)

Market Context

Summer 2021

~£1,138

Pre-crisis baseline.

Winter 2022 / 2023

£2,500 (Government capped)

Peak of the crisis (would have passed £3,500+ without caps).

Spring 2026

£1,641

Lowest baseline since late 2021 following wholesale drops.

July – Sept 2026

£1,862

Newly announced Ofgem cap—an immediate 13.5% jump.

The true shift is clearest in the raw unit rates. Five years ago, electricity hovered around 17p to 18p per kWh. Under the upcoming July 2026 price cap, that average climbs to 26.11p per kWh, while daily standing charges remain stubbornly high at around 57p per day to cover grid infrastructure updates and supplier failures.

Wholesale volatility has not vanished, and network charges have created a permanently higher “floor” for standard bills. Every single kilowatt-hour you generate on your own roof is a unit you are completely insulated from buying at these inflated grid rates.

Real Talk on Standing Charges

It is important to be realistic: having solar power does not mean you stop paying daily standing charges. As long as your property remains connected to the national grid to pull electricity at night or during dark winter days, your energy supplier will still charge you that fixed daily fee.

However, there is a smart workaround. With a correctly sized solar array paired with right-capacity battery storage, the financial impact of that standing charge can be completely neutralised. By storing your excess daytime generation and selling it back to the grid via lucrative export tariffs, your monthly export earnings can effectively cover the cost of the standing charge on your bill, moving you as close to a net-zero electricity cost as possible.

4. Large-Scale Upgrades: £0-Down PPA Funding

For larger properties, commercial buildings, or substantial domestic sites requiring larger installations of more than 40 panels, capital expenditure doesn’t have to be a barrier. If you want to bypass upfront costs entirely while immediately slashing your operational energy expenses, a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) via the “Energy For All” scheme is an ideal funding route.

Under this unique framework, the project is fully financed by HDM Energies and professionally installed by the team here at Legra. Instead of purchasing the hardware upfront, your organization simply buys the green electricity generated by the panels at a heavily discounted, fixed rate—guaranteed not to rise due to inflation or grid hikes for the entire length of your agreement.

Even better, once your contract term successfully ends (typically 10 to 25 years), ownership of the entire solar PV system transfers directly to you for just £1, giving you 100% free energy from that moment on.

These arrangements are particularly ideal for specific types of large-roof properties:

  • Warehouses & Logistics Hubs: Large, unshaded roof spaces can host massive arrays, turning dead space into a major operational cost-saver.
  • Schools & Academies: PPAs allow educational facilities to meet demanding carbon-reduction targets and lower daytime running costs without diverting restricted educational capital away from classrooms.
  • Churches & Community Buildings: Ideal for faith spaces and community centres that struggle to secure upfront capital funding but benefit enormously from predictable, lower utility rates.

5. Grants & Incentives: Target Support Shift

The government’s approach to funding green upgrades is undergoing a major transition under the Warm Homes Plan. There is a clear divide emerging between “Able to Pay” sectors (those who have the financial means to invest or leverage commercial financing) and targeted grants.

While heavy subsidy grants are being channelled primarily toward low-income households and social housing, the support structures for standard homeowners are tightening. The message from the market is clear: if you have the capital or lease footprint to upgrade your property, the current framework of incentives is your primary window before it shifts.

However, if you are looking to combine solar with other low-carbon technologies, there are still major grant pots open right now that you can leverage:

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (ASHP Grants)

If you are planning to replace a fossil fuel heating system with an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is incredibly lucrative. Standard gas-to-heat-pump replacements receive a £7,500 upfront grant.

Even better, the government has launched a temporary uplift providing up to £9,000 for eligible rural homes replacing oil or LPG boilers. Pairing a heat pump with a solar PV array is the ultimate setup, as your panels directly offset the electricity required to run the heat pump.

OZEV EV Charger Grants

Are you driving an electric vehicle? The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) updated its grant infrastructure. While standard homeowners with private driveways no longer qualify, the grant provides up to £500 per socket for:

  • Renters and leaseholders.
  • Flat owners with designated off-street parking.
  • Homeowners without driveways utilizing approved cross-pavement charging solutions (like charging gullies).

If you fall into these categories, you can claim up to £500 off your EV charger installation, which can be perfectly integrated into your smart solar management system.

6. Earn While Helping Others Go Green: Our £150 Referral Scheme

You don’t have to be installing solar on your own roof right now to benefit from the green energy transition. We believe the best introduction comes from word of mouth, which is why we offer a rewarding referral program open to absolutely everyone.

Introduce us to a friend, family member, neighbour, or business connection, and if they proceed with a full system installation (or a fully funded commercial PPA setup), we will pay you a £150 referral bonus as a thank you once the project completes.

There is no limit to the number of people you can refer. Whether you are an existing Legra customer who loves our work or simply someone who knows a property owner looking to escape rising energy prices, you can earn £150 for every single successful introduction you make.

7. Uncompromising Standards: Why Your Installer Matters

Because the financial stakes are high, you cannot afford to take shortcuts with desktop quotes or cut-rate components. A solar system needs to be structurally engineered to last for 25 years or longer.

To ensure you get the absolute best fit for your property, we come directly to your premises to discuss suitability, identify the best siting locations, and answer any questions you may have face-to-face. Unlike other companies that look at a screen from an office and charge a premium for consulting, we provide this comprehensive, expert site inspection completely free of charge.

Furthermore, Legra Electrical & Renewables operates to the absolute pinnacle of UK compliance standards:

  • MCS Certified: Every system we hand over is fully registered under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). This isn’t just a badge of quality; it is a strict regulatory requirement. Without an MCS certificate, you cannot legally access lucrative Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariffs to sell your excess power back to the grid, nor can you protect your product warranties.
  • TrustMark Registered: We are officially registered with TrustMark, the government-endorsed quality scheme. This guarantees that our consumer protections, trading practices, on-site safety, and technical competence have been thoroughly vetted to the highest consumer-safety standards in the country.

8. Flexible Payment Options Built Around You

We fully recognize the scale and significance of this investment, and we want to ensure that getting the absolute best for your property doesn’t mean facing rigid financial terms. To make transitioning to clean energy as smooth as possible, we provide a variety of flexible payment streams to suit your cash flow:

  • 0% Finance Available: Spread the cost of your premium installation across manageable monthly payments with absolutely no interest added (subject to terms and conditions).
  • Credit Cards Accepted: Safely fund your deposit or balance using your preferred credit card, allowing you to maintain your liquidity and capitalize on any card provider rewards or consumer protections.
  • BACS Direct Bank Transfers: For straightforward, efficient transactions directly from your account.

The Verdict: Don’t Wait for the Rush

As the VAT deadline creeps closer, international wholesale pressures mount, and energy bills continue their upward trajectory, the demand for premium solar installations is going to surge. Waiting means risking longer lead times, potential hardware shortages, and paying more in tax.

Invest in the long-term value, safety, and efficiency of your property today.
